The history of polo shirts

Originally known as the 'tennis shirt' after their inventor Rene Lacoste, polo shirts have been popular in modern fashion since the late 1930’s. At this period in history sportswear was often similar to formal dress and made from heavy cotton.

So after the tennis shirts success, other sports began to adapt them for their own use. Polo being one of the first, however the players and clubs would refer to their kits as formal tennis attire and by the late 1950’s the tennis shirt was standard across all polo clubs.

In 1972 Ralph Lauren launched his high fashion line which included a range he called 'the polo'. This style of shirt is now referred to as the 'polo shirt' across most English speaking nations. As the popularity has grown, their smart yet fashionable look, can be seen embroidered or printed with global brands and is used widely by businesses as uniform. Practical, smart and stylish

Whatever you want to use the printed polo shirts for, we have the right stock and printing method to suit both your needs and you budget. From single colour to full colour, for quantities as low as 10 or large runs of 1,000s, and using any of the following methods:

  • Screen Printing - With high set up costs, but low unit printing costs, this method is best for larger print runs (50+).
  • Transfer Printing - A basic method. Cheap and cheerful, ideal for smaller quantities and where long lasting quality is less of a concern. Ideal for staff at promotional Events.
  • Vinyl Transfers - The most durable printing method, and ideal for work wear and uniforms, but not so good for complicated designs or full colour printing.
  • Direct to Garment Printing - The newest of the printing techniques and ideal for most uses, especially small runs, complex designs and full colour printing. This process is not so good for printing on dark fabrics and a looser weave.

Use our handy guides to help you choose the right garments and printing method to suit your needs and budget.
